Note: Henry, a Finnish miner, metal mine identification check number #1, married, was killed in the June 30, 1903 explosion of Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. He was found at entry 17 at the dip, identified and removed from the mine on August 8, 1903, day 40 after the explosion. He was buried in one of the many unmarked graves in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Ojala, Elmer

Note: Andy Nyman, age 34; nativity, Finland; occupation, Timberman; single; killed in Hanna nine No. 1 on the 1st of July 1900. He had been in the employ of the company about eight years. Some of the men with whom he worked attempted to run a loaded car down the entry. They had a long rope attached to the car with which to haul it back. The rope became unfastened and the car got away running over Nyman and killing him. (1900 MIR)

Note: Andy Nyman was killed in the Union Pacific Coal Company's No. 1 mine in Hanna. His burial place is not known. (BL)

Note: On August 14, 1936, Mrs. Gus Ojala passed away at the Ojala residence in Hanna. Death was due to a heart attack. Mrs. Ojala was born in Alahärmä, Finland, November 10, 1874. In 1896 she was married to Gus Ojala and in 1897 they moved to the United States, settling in Hanna, Wyoming, where they have resided since that time. Mrs. Ojala leaves to mourn her sad departure a husband, three daughters, two sons, one sister and a granddaughter, as well as a host of friends.  (UPCCEM, October 1936)

He was found at entry 16 room 17, identified and removed from the mine on July 19, 1903, day 20 after the explosion. He was buried in Plot 253 in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Olivas, Steven Jessie (MM)

Note: Olivas, Steven employed by Energy Development Co. in the Vanguard No. 2 underground coal mine in Hanna, Wyoming. On or about February 23, 1982, at approximately 2:45 a.m., he was in a crew which was rock dusting a roadway inside the underground mine by spreading ground limestone on the wet roadway to dry the moisture for traction. The roof of the mine caved in while the crew was second-mining a bleeder pillar between numbers one and two left entries. Four hundred tons of rock fell on Virgle Cordell Renfrow, Jr., Steven Olivas, and Bruce Parker. Only Bruce survived. (MIR) (BL)

Note: Steven Olives was killed in a Hanna mine, but buried in Laramie, Wyoming. He has a headstone in the Laramie cemetery. (BL)

Ollila, Jalmer (Inquest) (MIR); Aka: Ollila, J. (MM)

Note: Jalmer Ollila worked as a Miner in the No. 1 mine. On Saturday, March 28, 1908, while the mine was idle, a fire crew consisting of 18 men entered the Number 1 mine to put out a fire burning in entry number 10. The mine exploded about three in the afternoon killing all the men in the fire crew. A rescue crew was organized and entered the mine to search for survivors. A second explosion occurred the same day about ten thirty in the evening. John and 41 other members of the rescue crew were killed in the second explosion. His body was found on Sunday August 16, 1908, on day 142 after the explosion, identified and removed from the mine. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the Hanna cemetery. (BL)

Note: The community was shocked and grieved at the death of Clarence Olofson which occurred on Wednesday, March 18th. Clarence was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Olof Olofson, old time residents of Hanna, and was born and reared here. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal Church on Sunday, March 22nd. Note: Funeral services for Conrad Olofson, 66, who died April 18th at the home of his brother, were held in the Methodist Church on April 21st with Rev. J.R. Palmer officiating. Mr. Olofson had been suffering from arthritis and had made his home with his brother, Olof Olofson, for the past several months. Born in Sweden November 23, 1876, he came to this country when 10 years old. He was an old-time resident of Carbon and Hanna but had lived in Utah for several years. He is survived by two brothers, Olof and Arthur Olofson, of Hanna, and several nieces and nephews. Interment was made in the Hanna cemetery. (UPCCEM, June 1943)

Note: The death of Austin O’Malley on June 29th, after a short illness, marked the passing of another old-time resident of Hanna. Mr. O’Malley was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1863. He came to old Carbon at the age of 12 and worked in the coal mines there. He came to Hanna when the Carbon mines closed down and worked in the mines here. Except for a few years spent in New Mexico and Tacoma, Washington, he has spent his life here. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ed Flannery, Mrs. R.J. Anderson, and Mrs. A.J. LaBlanc, of Tacoma, Washington, and Mrs. J.A. Warburton, of Hanna, and two sons, Archie and Austin O’Malley, of Tacoma, Washington, as well as nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Saturday morning, July 3rd, with interment in the Hanna cemetery. Sympathy is extended to the relatives in their bereavement. (UPCCEM, August 1943)

Note: The community of Hanna lost another of its pioneers when Mrs. Sarah Ann Burton O’Malley died at the Hanna hospital on April 17th, after an illness of several weeks. The deceased was born in Nottinghamshire, England, March 1, 1876, and came to America with her parents when a child. She was married at Almy, Wyo., in 1895 to Wm. Bailey, and lived in Utah for a while, then came to Hanna in 1903, moving to Diamondville when No. 3 Mine closed down. Mr. Bailey was killed in a mine accident in 1917 and the family returned to Hanna. It was here that Mrs. Bailey met and married John T. O’Malley who preceded her in death a year ago. She was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church April 20th, with Bishop Milner of Rock Springs officiating, interment made in the Hanna cemetery. She leaves to mourn her two sons, Arnim and Bruce Bailey; three daughters, Mrs. Geo. Wilkes, Mrs. E.R. Henningsen and Mrs. Albert Gaskell, all of Hanna; five brothers, John Burton of Evanston, Frank Burton of Chicago, and T.J., A.C., and R.S. Burton, all of Salt Lake; also nineteen grandchildren and a host of friends who extend their sympathy to the family. (UPCCEM, June 1937)

Note: Y. Ousmi, Japanese, age 34, employed 6 months by the Union Pacific Coal Company, single, killed in No. 2 on Jan. 23, 1917.  Miner.  The deceased was engaged in drawing the pillar in Room No. 30.  He was cleaning up some loose coal that had fallen on the entry track below the mouth of his room in order to push his empty car to the chute to load it. While he was thus engaged, a large chunk of coal fell from the rib, carrying some of the roof coal with it, falling on the deceased's back, injuring him internally. He was taken to the hospital where he died at about 8:30 the same day. He died from a fall of coal. (MIR)

​Note: G.M. Oviatt was reported on the Hanna Miner Monument in the Hanna cemetery as killed in the Hanna mines in 1971. He was in fact not killed but injured. He did not die from those injuries. It is not known what happened to him after the injury.
