The Earl Johnson Coal Company's Elk Mountain Valley No. 1 mine was opened in 1936. The company abandoned the mine in 1941. The mine produced 30,146 tons of coal during this period with a peak work force of 9 miners in 1940. No deaths were reported for the mine.
