A Note About the Book From Nancy Anderson at the Hanna Basin Museum
Lynne Kuderko’s “study” is a panorama of Hanna’s #1 Mine disaster of 1908. The central image is that fateful day, March 28, when two explosions rocked the mining camp. On the left are images preceding the disaster beginning with recent events within the gaseous, deadly mine.

The lost miners and their forbearers are introduced in their places of origin. Lynne examines the relationships and circumstances that bring each victim to the coal camp and the camaraderie that develops there.

The cast expands immediately after the explosions. Here are the heirs, the coal company officials, the lawyers and judges, the entire camp. In a work of persistent, meticulous scholarship, Lynne reveals the intricacies of probate, of claims and counterclaims, and in the process, adds a new dimension to the stories of this disaster and of all mining disasters.

Continuing on, the panorama concludes with portraits of the survivors and their progeny. For some, 1908 is one tragic year amid many; others move on. Lynne treats them all with compassion.

I praise
They Were the Flower of the Camp. It is Western history, labor history, and, for me, above all, women’s history. Exquisitely written, this is a worthy memorial to the lost miners of March 28, 1908.
