1936 – 1958 Coal Production Years

The Nugget Coal Company's Nugget No. 1 open pit mine near Elmo opened in 1936 and closed in 1958 after 23 consecutive years of coal production. The mine produced a total of 2,845,603 tons of coal with a peak work force of 41 workers in 1951. The mine produced only 5,621 tons of coal with a work force of 4 workers in 1940.  The mine’s highest year of coal production was 1952 when it produced 378,103 tons of coal with 41 workers. One miner, Edward Tynsky, was killed in 1952 at the Nugget mine.
